Approach
How a company gets built.
Defence is an unforgiving environment for a new company. Procurement cycles outlast startup runways, security requirements take longer to satisfy than most founders expect, and the customer is institutionally cautious for good reasons. The studio exists to absorb as much of that as possible so that a founder can spend their time on the capability rather than on the apparatus around it.
The formation sequence
- Formation
- The platform itself is stood up: legal templates, governance framework, security architecture and shared services that every subsequent company inherits rather than rebuilds.
- Reserved
- A concept is mapped against a real capability requirement. The customer case is documented, the technical pathway scoped, and the founder search opened.
- Activated
- A founder or venture lead is secured, the technical approach assessed, and a prototype plan developed and approved.
- Funded
- Prototype development, grant and innovation programme submissions, customer demonstration and early procurement work.
- Scaled
- Follow-on financing, production planning, team growth and contract delivery.
Funding pathways
For a new defence company, non-dilutive funding is not a supplement to capital. It is a substantial part of it, and knowing how to sequence it is a platform capability rather than something each company should learn independently.
We work across the Canadian innovation and research funding landscape — including the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security programme, NRC IRAP, Defence Research and Development Canada contracted research, the Canadian Safety and Security Program and SR&ED — alongside allied mechanisms such as NATO DIANA and the NATO Innovation Fund, and the newer instruments established under the Defence Industrial Strategy.
Security and compliance
A defence company is only as useful as its ability to hold the security standing its customers require. Ensis Studio carries much of that burden at the platform level, so that each company inherits a security framework rather than constructing one from nothing. Some of it necessarily remains with the operating company, since clearances attach to the entity holding the contract and to the people doing the work.
Governance
Each company has its own board and its own accountability. The studio holds board representation and capital-release authority, and provides the framework within which each company operates: delegation of authority, investment readiness review, conflict management, and the reporting standards a defence customer and an institutional investor both expect.
